We had no idea what we were walking into at Chef Battle. I mean I watch Top Chef, Master Chef, Hell’s Kitchen, Chopped....basically, if it’s a cooking show-I’m all in! This chef battle was a little different. 7 local chefs showed up to throw down!
Brandon Bross, Banquet Sous Chef at Lake Quivira Country Club
Jeremy Nettles, Owner of Joy-N Us Catering
Wesley Browning, Chef at 1989
Daniel Nutty, Chef de Cuisine at Lidia's Italy: Kansas City
Chris Jones, Sous Chef at Pearl Tavern
Jeffery Thomas, Sous Chef at Sullivan's Steakhouse
Niko Tsamolias, Executive Chef Pete's Steakhouse
We arrived at The Martin Street Event Space and the battle began. The chefs ran for ingredients and had a little over an hour to come up with a dish and prepared it for the judging.
It’s also Restaurant Week in KC, so these chefs have been working crazy hours all week and we’re already exhausted-so it makes it even more impressive that they showed up to compete!
After the judges were served, it was our turn to taste. We got bites from each chef (except one who ran out immediately). The food ranged from meatballs and burgers to ribeye risotto to surf and turf.
Our favorites were the filet and lobster surf and turf from Jeffery Thomas and the ribeye over bacon and mushroom risotto from Daniel Nutty.
Apparently our votes didn’t count. The lemongrass meatballs from Chris Jones took home the prize. Wesley Browning also got high praise for his all local slider. Green dirt farm cheese, local bread and meat definitely made for a fantastic slider! He has a food truck called Beauty and the Bistro that we will need to go to soon!
All in all it was a fun night and we hope the winners represent KC well in the next round!
