Hooray for Dre Day

Friday night some of us were feeling like a good ol' fashion dance party.  As we all know, dance parties are synonymous with the Power & Light District.  Get out of the way barely 21 year olds, your twerking is so passé.  We are into Retro Surf...Retro Dance...Retro Cool...obviously that equates to Shark Bar

Shark Bar is the home of the endless summer and brings the endless party.  From Nude Beach Tea's and Bikini Cooler to Shark Bar’s signature beach pail punch, you pick your libation to unwind and hit the beach.  Friday and Saturday nights the beach heats up with the greatest retro dance music this side of the North Shore. There was literally no better way to celebrate Dre Day!

The birthday girl and a few other brave souls stayed out until nearly 2 am, proving they've still got it! No members of Unfiltered Adventure were awake at 2 am.

Hey Ladies!

Hey Ladies!

Saturday offered so many options we decided to divide and conquer to maximize our adventures!

Stephanie headed to Atchison, Kansas to check out the Amelia Erhert Festival, an air show, margaritas and live music. Oh and she put her house on the market and sold it in a matter of hours.

Kristi went on her annual family trip to Bennett Spring State Park, can you say Trout Country!?!

Leslie and Andrea tried some new dranks, had a Moscow Mule and feasted on deliciously grilled  medium rare filet mignon like a couple of Queens.

You may recall Friendship Brunch was hosted at Summit Grill earlier this year. It was so delicious Dre decided to grab 21 of her favorite friends and round out her birthday weekend with bottomless mimosas and satisfying comfort food.

Bottomless mimosas indeed.  The Summit Grill wait staff is extremely optimistic, no glass was ever half empty.

I highly recommend the Jalepeno Cheddar Grits in a Jar. Allow me to elaborate, the grits were topped with thick-cut Nueske's bacon, Fritz's sausage and soft poached eggs.  Thank you Summit Grill.

No poison injections this week, just good clean fun!

Drovers for Days

Maureen's first Uber ride

Maureen's first Uber ride

As you all know, we are fond of wine. Often times we gather together and enjoy a box paired with hilarious stories and lots of laughs. Sometimes we jump in an Uber and make our way to the West Bottoms so we can enjoy wine from bottles. As if that isn't impressive enough, last Saturday we were privileged to join Michael Amigoni, wine maker at Amigoni Urban Winery, for a private tasting and a dose of education any KC native would appreciate.

The tasting reserved us a large table in the Barrel Room as we sampled 5 different wines. The architecture and decor are incredible. Michael Amigoni shared several fun facts regarding the building which produced the newspaper for the Stockyards called The Daily Drovers Telegram from 1932 - 1975.

Another interesting fact involves fenials pictured above. They are original to the building and had been covered up with sheetrock so they provided a very welcomed surprise once they were discovered! In order to maintain the history of the old newspaper building the Amigoni's chose to reuse old doors, tiles, safes, railings and anything they could salvage. The wine bars are custom built to have an old feel which pairs perfectly with all of the original materials.  It's impossible not to notice the gorgeous Corrara Marble counters atop the custom built bars. We learned the only place in the world to get it is Corrara Italy.  We should plan a trip to confirm. Once the architecture lesson was complete we refilled our glasses and started snacking. Amigoni serves up small plates featuring local cheeses, breads and spreads. The plates feature cheese from Green Dirt Farms in Weston, Missouri, and Shatto Milk Company in Osborn, Missouri, fresh baked bread from Kansas City’s Farm to Market Bread Company and spreads from KC Canning Company

Sunday morning we flexed our charitable muscles. Early mornings call for coffee and booze.

Here is our group, two years in a row volunteering at the Great Plains 10k race. You can find us cheering while handing out medals and high fives.

it was very pretty windy, glad we were volunteered not to run that race

Volunteering always makes us hungry. We decided to checkout a new brunch spot, the Homesteader Cafe. Our waiter raved about their pork and bison gravy as well as the Farmer's Breakfast. Oh and the homemade chocolate beignets. The beignets were amazing, I am still thinking about those little chocolate filled pieces of heaven.

Oh and the seasonal cocktails which were offered with the Passport Program. The Solstice tasted like Shatto Chocolate Milk. It was delicious.  I may have had three.

As our friends at The Homesteader Café said, weekends begin with good friends, great food and lots and lots of alcohol!

Reunited

As you all know I have been out of commission after undergoing surgery in January. Luckily I'm 92% healed which means I'm ready to party. Last weekend I was finally ready to participate in all of the activities!

Our favorite way to kickoff the weekend is with a Winter Warmer.  We stopped into an oldie but a goodie, Harry's Country Club.  We had intended to make two stops but Harry's happy hour sucked us in. They even gave us a fancy Reserved sign, ahem VIP. After the happy hour we moved onto the Winter Warmers. Harry's featured Jack Handey and Hot Buttered Rum cocktails. The Jack Handey was crafted for those deep thoughts this time of year, the name was clever but the cocktail was lacking in flavor.  Oh well onto the next, The Hot Buttered Rum was really tasty.  Would have hit the spot if it had not been 60 degrees in February.  We are not complaining though!

Saturday we headed to the Madrid Theatre for Brunched, a Boozy Breakfast Event hosted by The Pitch.  We signed up about a month prior to the big day so the anticipation was killing us.  Luckily we paid the extra cash to get VIP tickets, why wouldn't we?

We brunched like we've never brunched before! This brunch heaven showcased our favorite local brunch spots in one place. We even tried several new selections we had not ventured to yet. We feasted on brunch samples galore from area restaurants including Pinstripes, The District Pour House, Blip Roasters, Chez Elle, Morning Day Cafe, Brown & Loe, Schlafly Beer,  Seasons 52 & many more!   Our favorite brunch item was the banana's foster waffle, I believe the group feedback was to "Run, don't walk to the waffles".  In addition to the fantastic food there was also a Bloody Mary Competition!

So much deliciousness

So much deliciousness

According to The Pitch over 3,200 bloody marys were served in about 3 hours.  Impressive.  Bloody Mary's and olives for all...well for Steph at least.   The 3 finalists from left to right: the District served a pineapple jalapeño Bloody Mary that balanced sweet and savory flavors. Trago had the garnishings on point, the goat cheese stuffed tomato was both genius and delicious. Morning Day Cafe nailed the fresh tasting ingredients without tasting like dirt, well done.

The winner goes to The District! We couldn't have agreed more.

Kristi and Leslie headed out to KC Bier Co to spend some quality time with Miss Barley and celebrate the breweries 3rd anniversary.  Who doesn't love a pup friendly bar?  Perfect way to end their Saturday afternoon. Aren't these two the cutest?

Try the medium bodied Dunkel next time you go to KC Bier Co and let us know what you think!

Sunday we went to Pinot's Palette to support Girls on the Run.  Leslie volunteers as a coach for GOTR so we try to help support them any chance we get.  The painting was the most detailed painting I have ever attempted.  Thank goodness for the wine, it really gave me the confidence to create the masterpiece pictured below.  High five.

My first weekend back to adventuring was full of laughs, bloody marys and charity work.  I am still recovering but I am ready to do it again next weekend!

Cheers!
